The Parallel Cultures logo derives from the ancient Adinkra symbol, Owo Foro Adobo, which translates to “Snake Climbing the Raffia Tree.” The Raffia, a palm tree native to Africa as well as Central and South America, speaks to our rootedness in the histories, cultures, and peoples of Africa and the African Diaspora–while these regions are vast and diverse, our experiences often align and intersect.
According to Asante and Akan folklore, the “Snake Climbing the Raffia Tree” symbolizes steadfastness, prudence, and diligence–because of its thorns, the raffia tree can be a rigorous challenge to the snake yet the snake’s ability to climb it, is a model of persistence and prudence. Therefore, while vulnerable populations residing in disadvantaged and/or marginalized communities may experience great obstacles, Parallel Cultures endeavors to instill self-awareness, self-love, discipline, aspiration, and perseverance that will inspire youth to overcome adversity in order to succeed despite all odds.
